Adventures in Baking

Junior loves to help me in the kitchen so today we decided to make some cookies. Before we started I spent a few minutes on the ipad making a "cooking" board. It was wonderful for him to be able to "tell" me each step as we went. We talked about it ahead of time so he knew what each symbol meant(for those that the pics weren't obvious) and also what steps we needed to take to make our cookies.
Then we got out the ingredients and Junior walked us through each step.

Now on baking with Junior we are making cake mix cookies(super easy but perfect for a quick cooking activity with the dude, and who doesn't love triple chocolate cookies).
Sorry about the pictures. I didn't have any extra hands today and was trying to hold the board while getting an angle so you could see the board and his eyes.

Junior is showing me that first we add the butter
now stir the dough and crack the eggs, in the pic he is tell me to add the eggs
Put the dough in the pan
The pan is in the oven and now he is telling me to set the timer
He decided setting the timer was quite funny
Junior loved helping to make the cookies and especially liked sharing his cookies with this wonderful lady who stopped by to see us today.
This is Susan who runs Angels 2 the Heart. They have brighten Junior's days for a couple years now and we love them. Junior was midtreatment and needing a nap so not the greatest pic of him. A short video of the ipad cooking boards

  1. Can I tell you how honored I am to have been invited to journey with you on this blog?So cool Heidi. And this ipad is incredible.Watching you guys use it together brought was so touching.I am really excited for the doors this will open and tickled to be able to hear Juniors voice.

I have a button for our special friend Reagan.I don't know if you have been to her site, pop by maybe if you could, but her Grandma is buying her an ipad and her mom Tera is hoping that to implement similar programs so they can begin talking as well.Maybe,if you have time, you can help her find her way if she needs it.

Oh and seeing this private blog was so coincidental as I am going to stat another blog too, other reasons but necessary one as well,so let me know if you would like to tag along.I am going to post a bit about it tonight.

  2. I'm so thrilled to see Junior doing brilliantly with his iPad (even if it does sound like what I put in my shorts to catch any pee leaks).

Longer term, did you know that there are now communication aids that can be controlled directly by eyegaze? I tried one out last year and a few of my friends have them. One of the best is the ECO2 from Prentke Romich... they are sickeningly expensive at the moment but the prices will come down fast as the technology develops. I can tell you for sure that by the time Junior is a grown man he will be able to drive a powerchair, adjust his bed, turn lights on and off, make phone calls without help and talk freely - all with his eyes. It's already possible... just not affordable yet.
